'78 IH Scout??????

I was thinking the same thing. The best diesel demonstration vehicle these clowns can come up with is a freakin' Scout? If somebody actually likes the article and wants to go out and buy one, how many running examples do you think are left in the U.S.? 20?

I sent them a message:

Wrong information:
"The gasoline alternative is called biodiesel, and it's made from a mixture of diesel and vegetable oil."
Biodiesel is not a gasoline alternative, is it a diesel alternative. Biodiesel will destroy a gasoline engine. Biodiesel is refined from vegetable oil; it is NOT a mixture of diesel and vegetable oil.

http://biodiesel.infopop.cc is a great resource for information regarding Biodiesel and vegetable-oil based alternative fuels.

Off-topic: I run my 1982 Mercedes TurboDiesel on B99 (99% Biodiesel, 1% Diesel) and have had no problems thus far.

Wow, almost as much misinformation in this thread as in the article:

- Ethanol is NOT 5% water.
- Isopropyl in a drug store is 70-80% pure. The only place to get pure isopropyl at retail is buying ISO-HEET at auto parts stores.
- Gasoline is already 10% ethanol (at least) at the pump.
- Ethanol in Everett, MA right now is $2.85 per gallon at the pump, which makes it on a par with gasoline given the 30% hit to MPG.
- Price of raw material (corn) would not have shut down an ADM plant, they would have passed through the cost, and there would be enough demand to satisfy the business model.
- Liquor stores are only going to sell alcohol at about a maximum of 75% pure (Bacardi 151 proof, for instance). Perhaps your bootlegger can get you something more pure, but I doubt a liquor store will.
