Using reserve tank on 300td wagon for WVO?
Howdy,
I just recently purchased a 1980 300TD wagon and have been thinking about ways to convert it to run on WVO. I have been most interested in Single Tank Systems b/c of the ease and leaving the cargo room area free. Now, I know you can do a Singe Tank System pretty easily, but will only work on %100 WVO in temps above 60 degrees F. I have been looking at the reserve tank behind the spare tire and think it might be a prime candidate for being my diesel tank for start-up and shut-down. I'm wondering if any of ya'll have heard of this being done. I wanna eventually be able to run WVO in cold temps and realize that in order to do this I need to start-up on diesel to get the veggie hot to flow and also for shut-down. But, I don't want to add an extra tank that takes up space and heats up my cab. I've been thinking about adding a tank heater to my stock tank, also a heated inline hose, heated fuel filter, and fuel injector heaters. Do you ya'll think this will be the optimal set-up for wvo? Thanks for any help or ideas. Peace-- Will |
that is not a reserve tank.

What reserve tank are you talking about? On my SD and I believe all Mercedes there isn't an extra tank for the reserve. The reserve is just a portion of the main tank.
EDIT- Looks like Mo beat me to it as I was typing. |
Thats an expansion tank. Its there because the flat tank under the floor has no air space above the filler neck for the fuel to expand into.

i have a tank that is split 70/30 that goes in the stock location
i also squeezed another 5 gallons into that space works awsome |
... are you talking about the "egg crate" up under there? that's for vacuum...

Attention all WAGON owners. The fuel expansion tank that Lance and Jimmy are referencing was originally metal during certain years; then it was changed to plastic. Guess what happens to 20+ year old plastic? If you have a damaged plastic fuel expansion tank, and want to replace it with a pristine metal fuel expansion tank, I know someone who has one.:D Sorry for the hijack post. |
The fuel expansion tank that Lance and Jimmy are referencing, and daw_two is promoting would make for an interesting 1/2 gallon diesel tank. :)
FWIW, daw_two has good parts. |
I have had experience with using fairly small purge tanks. I ran a 3 gallon one with an external filler for a while. It was acceptable but I wouldn't want to go any smaller. I think 6 gallons is a more practical limit since you could use it until it is down to below one gallon and then fill it back up with one 5 gallon diesel can without looking to make sure it isn't over filled.
By the way, I really like external fills. I don't think I will ever go back to filling in the trunk. |
