What Fuel Addatives do you use? or recommend?
Before my 300SDL I have not owned a diesel since my bad a$$ Ford Escort GL diesel(yes I said diesel) back in 1985 we leased brand new. Can't remember all the specs but someone once told me it was a mazda motor in it. Non turbo, 5 spd. 40mpg was the lowest it ever got and 53 was straight highway! Why would they not make something like this available currently?
What addatives do you guys use either for preventive maint or to help longevity/performance. I hear all kinds of stuff on the street and wanted to know from you experts! Thank you for your time!!! Hip

I use power service (white bottle in winter, gray bottle in summer). Maybe it is a placebo but I find the engine runs quieter and smoother with it and the winter stuff lowers the gel point of the fuel. I also think it helps squeeze a little more MPGs out but again that may be placebo too. I "guesstimate" about 8 ounces per tank. FWIW that's my formula.

I use Startron/Soltron in my tank to prevent any biological growth. If your tank has sat for more than 6 months, I would recommend using this as well to get any fungus out of the system. Other than that, I sometimes use Sea Foam engine treatment, but it is better used as a purge in these engines (look up diesel purge, it is a rough equivalent, different brand), cetane booster in cold weather, and water treatment when it is humid (though Soltron has water treatment in it).

I am using Power Services also with my MB. 12 oz per tank. However, I am experimenting with B20 at the moment and do not add anything extra to the diesel when using it.

stuff I have used
Okay, I have a slew of different products that I have used under different circumstances.
On a car that has sat for awhile (like Coda), I gave a few treatments of Starton to kill any stuff in the tank. For a car that has been "babied", I like to give it a Diesel Purge made by Liqui Moly or a suitable substitute to clean out the injectors. Don't forget to change both fuel filters and the air filter when giving a new car the FIRST go over. Every tank, I use about 6-8oz of Power Service. I switch between the 2 products, but it usually doesn't get cold enough here in Memphis to even worry about gel. I have burned B100, homemade, and that did wonders. Car really ran smoother with it; however, old original rubber fails with the use of Biodiesel. And when I say Biodiesel and B100, I mean the Methy Ester that has been fully converted, washed, and dried. I am not refering to used vegetable oil or a blend.

The old diesels won't pass the current emissions standards for new cars. I believe only VW and MB have been able to meet the new US standards.

Don't forget about the big 3 trucks that are diesel and because of the DPF and cats they are getting less MPG. so lets burn MORE fuel to be cleaner? i don't get that..... I use 1 oz of 2 stroke per gal in my diesel tank on my truck. there is a very big difference with the oil and with out it. And then my veggie tank gives my injectors all the lube they can use and then some I have not driven the Benz enough yet. I will probably burn d80V20 ish in the main tank and then V100 in the heated second tank when I get to putting the car back together.

I'll use PowerService (white) in winter occasionally, otherwise just fuel.
I'll agree with someone, if it's been sitting a while or you don't know it's history, do a purge and use a fungicide if necessary.

I use about a quart of B100 in every tank. I used to run at least B20, but my sources of BioD have dried up A quart for every 17 gallons seems to work very nicely as I am getting 29+ mpg in the SDL consistently at average speeds of 71mph!

I don't recommend any additive in the summertime unless you've got an algae/fungus problem.

I would say a water treatment if you live in a humid climate and do not drive much, recently we've had unusual amounts of rain and humidity up in the Northeast.

I don't use anything in the funky little bottles. Depending on where I happen to be when I fill up, I either use regular DF2 or B20. Just for a try I filled my 300D with B99.9 a while ago and have burned through about 2/3 of it. Other than a different exhaust smell, no discernable difference.

Just talked to the old salt at my local indie this morning. He said putting a quart of transmission fluid in a tank full works wonders. Haven't tried yet but he is well-respected in these parts.
