I would be interested in it also as a keeper. Plus I'm only an hour away from you. Here is what I'm interested in doing, Take yours and part out my 87 300D to get yours back on the road. I really need a seven passenger car soon as the new baby is due in march. I would think I have most of the parts from my 300D to get it good again.

Vstech... I understand if you have dibs on it, but I could really use a car like this, and I would let you have the remains of the 300D if your interesest...

I'm actually running into town today and buying an 81 300D to get me around until I have all this figured out.

OK, I found a wonderful condition TD for chump change, so I relenquish my dibs on the TD, if another member can use it!

Sweet! But, for my dibs I would need to be able to buy it relatively soon as I would need the time to get it ready and one the road before March....

And why can I ever get lucky enough to meet someone like you that within a reasonable drive to me.... My luck with both Rovers and MB's so far is everyone that knows them and has a yard full of spares is 6+ hours from me....

ngarover, your only an hour a way. Hmm. Send me an offer. Come look at it. Main thing i care about is engine and tranny. If you have a parts car with a good powertrain and really want this we can work something out. I'm glad to see it on the road. Especially if you have cash.

Actually 2.5 hours, but almost a strait shot up 24. I might do it this weekend if your going to be around. Thing is I do have the parts car if I go this way, bad part is I would need your engine probably cause I don't know what's wrong with mine yet. See the this thread....

1987 300D Sigh...

About what ball park would you be looking at? I have cash right now, but I did spend some last night when I bought a 81 300D.

My engine is no good. I'm gonna break it down. I'm keeping it and trans and probably whole car for parts. Every time I think of selling I remember that awesome sls system. It's nice u all want to keep it on road but at 275 k this has seen better days. U can do better. I bet u could find a nice gasser body and put a diesel in it. Can't do anything quick anyway. Sorry.

Seems a waste to part it out if in otherwise good condition, without first trying the "steam clean" recommended. It would also be good ammo against the anti-WVO nuts on forums if you/we could restore the engine (ie stop the oil consumption).

Agree. Let me use my 300D and take what's good off mine and rebuild yours. Don't make me buy that other rust bucket...

You can't let your emotions get in the way of car maintenance. Unless your an experienced mercedes mechanic with a lift, the next best thing is a working parts car up on blocks in your yard

I wanted nothing more than to get that thing to quit using oil. I tried steam cleaning although i added a little methanol and messed that up. We'll still learn a lot from it when i tear it down. We'll learn if the steam cleaning could have worked and more. And i should be able to do a ring job easy enough i hope with the head off if it is just stuck rings right? Then the engine can be repurposed to power my house.

This car just happened to be the perfect match for me and my wagon except the interior was the wrong color. It had my type of WVO system and everything broken on it works on my driver and everything broken on my driver works on this car. Its like a match made in heaven.

This car will live on. Its parts will allow my wagon to live a longer healthier life. And its engine and wvo system may be a generator powering my house one day. Its definitely not getting wasted and its serving me very well.

Watch next month there will be 1987 TDs on craigslist in great shape all for under 4000.00 Thats what happened right after i spent 4500 on mine.

Ok. Ngarover and I pulled the head yesterday. That number 3 cylinder was scored and had like a 1 square centimeter gouge about 1 mm deep in it. Too bad. Ill post some pics later. So its toast. I suspect the wvo killed this one because the glow plugs were not functioning and there wasn't adequate heat to the wvo.

Things i have immediately for sale off this car

Left and Right Tail light
third seat in great shape
Good turbo -- Garret
Brake calipers
coolant reservoir

Email me or pm . I'll post these in for sale section too.

What make you think so negatively on WVO? There a lot of engines damaged running on #2 diesel. So #2 diesel is NO good either?

Good point. He could have just not changed his oil. He said he changed it regularly with synthetic and i have some receipts for it. it could have been any number of things.

What can cause a cylinder to score that badly? Given the state of the single tank veg system not heating very well and the 3 burned out glow plugs and him saying he ran pretty much 90% veggie oil (not blend, just 90% over all ) over for the last 40,000 miles , I'm thinking that his motor oil got contaminated from unburned veggie oil in that cylinder # 3.

What do you think?

Also it turned out the rust was pretty bad at the passenger side and was a hole in fram there under the passenger seat. So it was a good one to part out.
