Electric truck conversion
WHUNTER asked me to post this link.
So here it is http://www.evalbum.com/2155 It will do 65 on the freeway. Range about 15-20 miles depending on the you drive. If you shift like a gas car it is faster than the 4 cylinder that came out of it. Add more batteries = more range and more speed. Motor RPM 5200 all day long. Drive in 2nd to about 40 MPH then shift to 3rd ...Ed Last edited by whunter; 02-24-2011 at 12:32 PM. Reason: corrected name |

Thanks for posting this
Having done this conversion, you can offer solid data on how it might be done on Mercedes chassis.

I have no doubt that it can be done on any manual transmission Mercedes. I used the existing 5 speed and clutch. Some people dont use a clutch at all, they just shift. My first conversion was an old Nissan Sentra. The trans gave up after about a hundred miles. I took everything out of it and put it in the truck. ....Ed

Interesting conversion. Ed, did you think about using a salvaged traction battery from a hybrid car? They're becoming pretty widely available. I think it would jack up your voltage significantly.

Very cool! I always thought the w126 would be a great platform for an electric vehicle, even a diesel electric. Maybe someday when there is more money available...

I'm waiting for the price of lithium batteries to come down . Real dense charge and half the weight. Pound for pound lithium batteries would give me a range of over a hundred miles on a charge plus more voltage. The lead acid batteries weigh 63 pounds each. I have 14 of those. |
