First time on UMO

Hey all,

Last night I filtered about 1 1/2 gallons of UMO down to 5 microns. It was the oil that came out of the car from its first oil change so it had been sitting for a few months. I mixed in a splash of RUG while I was running it through the filters.

I am using 4" diameter bag filters, 100 micron stuffed inside a 5 micron, in a 4" PVC pipe capped on one end and a 1/2"x90 street elbow glued into the bottom of the cap. It all works quite well and the flow is good, too.

I dumped the oil into my fuel tank with the car idling and by the time I walked around to the front, the fuel filter was coal black but the engine didn't skip a beat. I do notice a difference in exhaust smell and maybe a little more smoke but I can't tell because the car smoked on 100% D2 already. It needed a valve adjustment 100K miles ago so maybe that accounts for the smoke, rough idle and poor performance. I would hazard a guess that the injectors have 250+K on them as well. I'm picking up some valve wrenches this weekend, so maybe I'll have time to adjust the valves.

100K since last valve adjustment!!! Yeah, adjust them properly and you should see a difference. If you are talking about the 1983 SD, the service manual calls for the valves to be adjusted every 15,000 miles!

I'm just guessing at the 100K valve adjustment based on how much the car shakes at idle. It's pretty bad. I got some valve adjustment wrenches this weekend but I need a feeler gauge set before I can adjust anything. I'm really hoping to see difference in idle and maybe performance.

DO NOT run motor oil, even if it's filtered. When I was experimenting with the car I ran a gallon of virgin motor oil through my car (using a heat exchanger, at ~180*F) and I'm pretty sure that's what junked the injectors up so bad.

I can see that happening if you ran it straight. It should be blended with Diesel at low concentrations and RUG at higher concentrations.
