Battery draining on both WVO conversions
I have an 83 300SD and an 80 300TD. Both are identical setups with a heater unit (glow plug) from mercedes source and injector line heater wraps by fatty wagons. Ever since hooking in the injector line wraps my cars at idle seem to lose power. If the lights are on at night and the heat or wipers and I get to a destination and shut off the car and then try to start it, its almost completely dead. This is on a NEW battery also. Anyone have issues with this and would a stronger alternator (if even made) help. I'm in NJ so I NEED the extra heat to make the system work in the winter. Thanks for any ideas.

I used stock alternator, but made sure my regulator was new.

weak alternator
They are barely able to keep up with all of the electrics in stock condition. Now you have not one but two high power add ons. That is why Fattywagon sells the alternator upgrade. It has to be the most common upgrade to an old mercedes.
I met a guy at the junkyard that modified the mount and installed Cadillac alternators usually from the junkyard. That sounds really difficult to me, but a great idea. |
Just a suggestion, but many people add heat by using the available heat from the coolant system. A flat plate heat exchanger is a pretty simple way to get your oil up to 165-180 without straining the electric system.

I need to up the amps on all my cars because of add ons. Not just for the engine. So i'll definitely look into it. |
