Pump For Getting Grease Out of a Dumpster
So, I've started collecting from a couple of local sources and so far, I've been using a drum pump to get the oil out of the dumpster. Needless to say, when pumping 50 gallons this can get a bit tiring.
Any suggestions on what hand operated pump would do it faster? Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

If you're pumping out of a oil "dumpster" you are most likely stealing oil that doesn't belong to you.
Vaccum is the only way to go. Very large shop vac or a drum vac. Dayton drum vac.

I've heard of tapping a vacuum line and sucking a used hot water tank down to whatever vacuum you can attain, should be 23"Hg on a 61x in good shape. Plumb it w/ a 1" ball valve and a 1" or greater hose on a barb. Open the ball valve and suck it all in. Don't know if people run the motor & use it for vacuum at the time or just rely on a big evacuated tank.

How about a wet / dry workshop vacuum cleaner?
(Probably won't last long and I'd hate to clean it after wards but...)

That is certainly one of the benefits of doing it by hand. I was hoping to avoid using electricity as the dumpsters are about 50-60 feet away from any electrical outlets but that may be the only way to do it. My vane pump does well but, not having anything for it to physically mount to makes the task more difficult than it needs to be. I may just need to buy a 2" pipe flange and mount it to a piece of plywood that will span the opening in the top of the dumpster and make holding the pump itself easier.
I asked my friend to leave the grease in the cubies instead of dumping it into the dumpster so we'll see how that goes. Quote:
Thanks for the replies gents.

Hey it's cool.. I'm not tryin to call tha law on ya. I'm just hijacking your thread to spread the word from an insiders perspective. I'm no fan of huge corporate collection companies. We work in direct competition with them for any resturant that produces over 20 gallons/month. We all pay resturant owners per gallon for the oil and provide them with collection containers free of charge in exchange for the privlage. Difference is that we bring the oil back to the biodiesel plant and they load up the tankers and sell the oil overseas to be used for who knows what. I'm going to assume that this "dumpster" that you speak of is large, metal, lid maybe locked, out back the resturant and it probably has labels on it that may say something like "this container and its contents are property of blah blah blah"... Yeah sure big companies containers are scattered about haphazardly around the land. They may have been there since before your friends opened their biz. They may have been long neglected on the pickups but they're not forgotten. If big company found you taking the oil it wouldn't matter if your friend ownes te resturant and he ok'd. Once the oil is in the drum it belongs to someone else. It's just a principals thing.. Just make an arrangement with the resturant to store the oil for you in some alternate container. Better yet encourage your friend and thier other resturant connections to sign up with a collection company that definitely uses the oil for fuel production.. Looks like Chicago Biofuels can hook that up. Phil

I think the plan from here on out is to have the restauranteurs put the oil in the five gallon cubies the oil came in. Wasn't aware of the possession thingy when the oil hits the dumpster. It'll be easier for me to grab anyway.
Thanks 2 tank. Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

I get sick of cubies. Storing them, moving them, dumping them out, throwing them away when empty.
I have a "Sucker" made from a 30 gallon well tank. I find it to be much easier. |

Dealing with cubies is another thing I wanted to avoid. Nice thing is, I can provide them to my contacts and have them reuse them. That way, I only have 10 or so cubies that I move between 3 or so restaurants. Plus, its a lot easier to get a bunch of cubies into a 300TD than an upright 30-55 gallon drum.

the awesomest pump i have ever seen, was made by an old german-cuban man, (who is like mr. improv-engineer, go figure, LOL) out of a 17 dollar new oil-pump from autozone, that was supposed to go on a plain old gm v8......he drilled the housing and threaded hose barbs to connect hoses, and plugged the one inlet with JB, and mounted it on a block with a drill motor from a cordless powerdrill hardwired to a gel-cell car battery.....that thing self-primes, like flushing the toilet on an airplane, WOOSSHH!!!, and pumps up a 5 gallon bucket full of oil, through 3 different filter element canisters even, in about a minute.....the only negative thing i can say about it, is that its shaft is lubed by "weeping" oil, which wouldnt matter inside a motor anyways, so it drips a bit.....who caressss!!!!! that thing sucks like a vacuum cleaner even pushing through a filtration system, and for 17 bucks at autozone + a few holes drilled and ports threaded and sacrifice an old pawn-shop drill, well i'm all for it, i think its slick....getting one myself this month coming up, setting it up over the 4th......ill take pics then.....
