Whats so special about the 1985 diesel engines for WVO?
 

Im wondering what it is Ive heard a little about that 1985 diesels were some of the bes to use for burning Vegetable oil. Is this true? and if so does anyone have some technical specifics as to why.

its because they were IDI diesels.Instead of DI diesels.The fuel does not coke them as bad.pre 85 were cast iron also,with cast iron heads.

My guess is that you heard that from people who own a 1985.
I thought my 617 was the best engine until I got a 603, then a 606, then a 642, etc.

As with almost everything involved in burning WVO, it depends. It depends on a lot of variables.
Most of the variables involve the owner/operator.
The design of their system.
The quality of the fuel they make.
How they use their system.

I don't consider a system, it's use, and user, successful, until the vehicle has gone over 100k with no ill effects. You can just dump WVO into the diesel fuel tank and the car will run... for a while... until it doesn't anymore.

The 60X engines are fine too-they're still using a mechanical IP. Common rail engines are a bit more picky with their fuel supply.

I've got a 603 with 328k miles. Started blending without a kit at 180k, then went to a single tank kit around 240k. I still blend in the winter, but run straight wvo in summer. Engine has held up exceptionally well. Great compression still. The only repair I've made to the fuel system is injector nozzles a few months ago.

With a single tank kit, you have to use common sense as far as the weather is concerned. Also the quality of the oil I have is very good. 100% canola oil, filtered well. Have used peanut oil in the past too with good results. I won't put just any oil I find in it.
