OM616 Timing bump for WO
 

Hey guys..

I'm looking to bump the timing just a bit on my om616 for running alternative fuels. The timing is currently correct and the car runs great...

Is there a simple way to bump the timing? On my Cummins, its a matter of going ~1/8" past the timing mark on the case.. is there a simple method such as this for the OM616?

Not looking for much.. just enough to combat the slower burn rate of the oils.

There are multiple threads on setting IP timing. It'll come down to choosing how many degrees advance you want and using the drip test to dial it in. You'll move the IP towards the engine for advance.

How many degrees? Dunno.

I also suppose you could advance it without doing the drip test by moving the IP and seeing how it runs. If you go too far you could back it off until you're happy. I've read about some guys doing it this way, kind of like you might when "guessing" timing with a distributor on a gas engine - advance 'til it pings and then back off a little.

I've read it also depends on where on the RPM curve you want more power. More advance will improve power earlier on, while retarding will help the higher revs, if I've got that right. The info's here in the forums, to be found with a little digging.

Are you sure the oil you're using has a slower burn rate than diesel?

WMO has more energy, but burns slower. From my understanding, this is why the engine runs noticeably quieter and smoother with less "knock"

So as far as bumping the timing is concerned, just loosen the pump and rotate it slightly towards the cylinder head?

Typically when setting timing, how much movement at the pump makes for 2 degrees?
