The quieting of the engine might be the result of retarded timing due to the combustion characteristics of the fuel as it occurs when running WVO.

"Retarded timing (quieter engine) means you are getting lower power, worse mileage and more emissions. And it burns cooler which leads to more deposits forming."
Blending in 10% Kerosene (at least with vegetable oil) is a remedy I've often seen recommended to optimize performance.
