Interesting that I'm responding to a reply to a comment made nearly two years ago...

Anyway, I think the concern expressed here is one of a griding wheel "coming apart" (on a grinding machine, bench grinder, pestal grinder, etc.)

I've heard that aluminum CAN be ground successfully (in serious grinding machines, not free hand) using appropriate wheels, lubrication, and attention to technique.

However, garden variety wheels in bench grinders or pedestal grinders in typical shop use are NOT suitable for grinding soft stuff such as aluminum or copper. The wheel loads up with soft stuff, and things start to heat up. If the hapless user pushes even harder because it's not cutting well, then it only makes things worse. I have not personally seen it, but some claim that one can damage the wheel and cause it to fail catastrophically.

Finding the wheel on a general-purpose shop grinder loaded up with aluminum or copper tends to bring choice words to mind, hence rickg's reference to an "aluminum grinding bandit". At best, it means having to dress the wheel down enough to get past the junk before it can be expected to function correctly for its intended purpose. Worse, it means that one is using equipment that was used by someone who either didn't know what he was doing, or knew better and did it anyway. Neither one of those is good.

Don't get me started on some of the crummy "homeowner" bench grinders with their crummy tool rests, shields, etc...

wheels load up and heat related expansion/contraction of embedded material compromises condition of grinding wheel which can lead to wheel failure. Obviously the failure is more likely to occur during use hence the pieces of broken grinding wheel flying at the face of the operator.

used transformer oil

I met a guy at the auto parts store one day burning used transformer oil in his diesel Rabbit. He worked for the local power company and they gave it to him in 55 gal. drums for free. People in Africa fry food in the stuff. His diesel Rabbit purred! Maybe I need to call the local Power company.

Now that is truly frightening. Transformer oil is loaded with PCBs.

Yea I've loaded them up before but after sharpening some lawn mower blades and stuff like that they tend to unload. I was using a die grinder that had a stone on it which kept clogging so I'd just touch it down on the grinder wheel while the bench grinder was off, worked well.

Problem is high Kerosene content. It will burn alright but it is lacking in lubricicity, which is why most people in the know who run kero base in their cars also add a good dose of biodiesel. The BD will do a better job of lubricating that the stock low sulfur diesel fuel and henxe extend engine life, just as low lubricicty fuel wil shorten it.

I'd think charcoal starter would maybe even work in a gasser. Of course a diesel 'd want some lube added (oil) to it.

How about turpentine?

I know from personal experience that charcoal starter and/or paint thinner will not run a gasser.

Numerous years ago after a day of golf with some friends....I had a half bottle of Jack Daniels left from our outing. I did not want to drive home with an open container of booze in the car.....was worried that the x-wife would find it....so I poored it into the tank of my 84 300SD and through the bottle away. The little bit of Jack did'nt even phase the SD..

I still favor the idea of used oil from the donut shop and seeing how many cops will follow you around just to keep smelling DONUTS.

My understanding is that the red dye in non-taxed fuel also glows under UV light. ATF does not.

Usually donut fryers use shortening AKA Crisco. I don't think that stuff is good for anything, least a diesel engine.
