She's cookin...
BTW-For grins, I ran my tank down to empty and burned 4 gal of WalMart's cheapest vegetable oil (soybean/corn blend) through Marlene the wagon this weekend. Runs great, lots less klatta, klatta diesel racket and the exhaust smells just like you're downwind of a Popeye's. But, I honestly think the best part of all this was the look on my Dad's face when I started pouring jugs of cooking oil into the tank.
Unfortunately, SVO isn't really an alternative until fuel is higher than $3.50/gal but I wanted to experiment with a known quantity before doing any investment in WFO filtering gear. If this all works out, I guess I'll have to buy one of those silly chef's hats to go motoring in.... R Last edited by R Leo; 07-31-2003 at 10:00 AM. |

I've been running 25% WVO in my 240D for a couple of weeks now and so far no problems. Also helps the fuel cost. My 240D also does not smoke as much when cold in hard aceleration. Use to not be able to see car behind, now just a hint of smoke. I wonder what the cars and bikers think when I pass them and they get hungry from the exhaust smell. I'm in the process of making a heat exchanger so I can run straight Waste oil. Then I can really save some fuel money. I got my filters from McMaster Carr and just copied from the different types of WVO heater setups. Can't see spending $500.00 for something I can make for less then $50.00.

I thought there was a process you had to go through to make the veggie oil fuel worthy.......

The only thing that is a MUST is that it must be filtered. I filter to 5 microns. Then pour it into the tank... The secondary filter on our cars is 10 micron rating so going to 5 is a little more then I need but I wanted to be sure to get all the junk out of it before I used it in the engine. Once I get the heat exchanger working I plan on running plain WVO straight and again I will filter to 5 micron before I pour it into its own tank.

JUst curious. Can clean veggie oil be mixed with diesel?
I ask because being in Miami, I don't have to worry about the gelling problem. If that's the case, I have a few sources that are just begging to get rid of good used veggie oil. I will by the kit from greasel kit in the near future for those few days we get that I'll have to worry about the weather. Thanks |
