If all goes well this year maybe I'll do an all out two tank conversion next year.
Hi BoostnBenz,
My 300Ds are all on a diet of 50:50 WVO:biodiesel.
To avoid solid oil in the fuel, I cold filter the WVO, trapping the tallows in the filter. When the filter clogs up, I heat the tallows with an electric immersion heater and drain it into metal buckets, for use in my future 2 tank system.
In ?Western Australia at this time of year, we get daytime temperatures in the mid - high 20s ('C) and nighttime temps down to around 5-10'C.
Winter is still a way off, and I expect overnight temps of 2-7 'C with daytime temps up to 20'C during winter. Our summer can be a bit unbearable, with daytime temps hitting 42'C several times and overnight tempreratures between 20 and 35'C with humidity up to 90% on occasions.

FYI, I have just received a reply to my queastions of our Department of hte Environment regarding collection and transport of WVO which is a Controlled Waste.
Carriers of CW are required to be licensed and obtain a $50 permit for each collection. Teh vehicles are required to be licensed as CW transport vehicles and be placarded, showing the CW being carried.
My questions related to collection of 20 litres of used cooking oil from a resaurant. I attach a scan (.jpg) of the reply, which only came after a second letter, and a copy to my local politician.

Thanks Tony. Have you found the point where that starts gelling up? I'm not ready to make biodiesel yet, I want to start off with the easiest stuff first then work my way up. Jeeze, that does sound unbearable! 200L is a lot of oil, I wouldn't be surprised with that.

Sure it is edible, just one may not enjoy it! That sounds like a pretty absurd law but there are two which I'd think are applicable. If you are pumping it out of somebody else's dumpster then you are in essence stealing from them. Also I believe any quantity over 5gallons of hazardous materials (not in a proper container, ie diesel in a diesel can is alright or auxillary fuel tanks are alright but a bucket or bottle of something...) is supposed to have a license to transport. Now I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for either but....

I hope to be running on WVO by the end of May. I'm in the process of building my 20 gallon tank to go in the trunk. The design is done, I need to make some parts.

I can't wait to throw the switch.

I already have most of the stuff to do it, or know where to get all of it, the only thing holding me back is I still haven't found a source. I don't want to go any further before I can acquire a source as I hear in some areas the restaurants get paid to sell their old WVO to a company as a commodity.

I've been running WVO for a month now. Since I got a good heat exchanger, operation has been flawless, but time will tell. At least I only have $1000 invested in the car, and another $300 in the WVO fuel system.

Angry California blood money

You must be licenced in California, Dont ask.

The law initially came about when the tallow guys actually paid resturants for their used oil. It was being stolen and resold. Now however that is not the case and people have to pay to have it hauled off.

There was a loophole that if you were not hauling it to a renderer then you did'nt have to register. However the renderers assoc. backed legislation that closed the loophole effective 1/2003. Protecting their interests I guess.

BTW it costs $175 a year for a license and $1000 dollar fine for each offence of hauling without a license.

It's rediculous and forces many people to steal it.............. with permission from the establishments owner.

OH you California guys stay out of my grease!!!!

Stephen

Thread resurection

Our 83 300TDT uses a blend of Dino/Bio Diesel and filtered WVO. The blend is about 20/80 in the summer and then 70/30 in the winter. If a cold front is coming in I will top off the tank with Dino and additive.

No conversion to our car...yet. I am currently gathering parts to convert to a two tank system with heat exchanger, boost pump, additional filtration, selector valves, and vacuum and heat gauges.

Our suburban will be next inline to receive an upgrade as it also is currently using the blend program in a stock fuel system.

I gather my oil from a few restaurants that allow me to pull from their dumpsters, thus saving them money on collection. I allow the oil to settle, then I run it through a Centrifuge, then run it through a series of filters to a holding drum. From the holding drum I either pump through another filter into my vehicle, or pump into a mixing drum, where diesel/Kero/bio are added to a little RUG, and additives. This blend is mixed, loop filtered and then pumped into my vehicle.

Future plan is to install two tank set up in the short term, and then start making bio as a long term plan.

Hey, I just "de-commisioned" a wagon with a full veggie conversion and have electric selector valves, filtering system (including a de-watering setup), etc., from it. Was going to ebay it all (already did the arctic fox heat exchanger), but LMK if you want/need anything. Would rather sell to a member cheap than see ebay get profit for doing little to nothing.

Running three cars on WVO. An 85 300D turbodiesel an 87 300D Turbo both on straight VO in the summer and blended with D2 in the winter. Third car is a 98 E300 Turbodiesel with a Greasecar two tank kit and FPHE. Mileage on grease for the cars is as follows:
85 just purchased
87 55K
98 52K

No grease related issues, other than plugged filters, to date.

Been making my own bio for both 300's for tens of thousands of miles. No problems. Made a WVO 2 tank system for my Ford E350 and it worked well. Don't use WVO in the MBs because I mostly drive them on short trips around town, plus like TonyfromWestOz, my wife isn't into flipping switches. A couple of years back I looked into the responsibility (being a good citizen and all) of paying highway taxes on my homemade fuel. Here in KY, I would have to register as a fuel distributor, be bonded, liscensed, and be inspected regularly. No thanks.

B20 in my 300D...

I've been running on B20 in my Hansi all summer long and the car loves it - it's been great: quiet, smooth - too bad the season is ending... we'll be running dino-diesel all winter long.
