E300 Exhaust help needed

Well, when it rain it poors. It looks like I need a new catalytic converter - since when did diesels need catalytic converters?

Anyway, the dealer part is $1,395 - no typo!!

So my thought is this...

Why not just put a straight pipe from the header to the rest of the exhaust?

Has this been done before? There are no diesel emision standards in PA.

Just had my 95 fixed by an independant shop $135.00 and almost kissed him. Dealer only for the 95 and that was $1800.00.
You can either have new pipes welded in or have the whole converter covered with sheet stainless. I wouldn't take it off for a lot of reasons, but mostly because resonance sound. By pass will definetly make more noise. Actually I had cosidered buying a universal one from JC whitney and welding on the pipes. They have one that looks like a close fit

So did you have new pipes put in or did you have it covered. I would imagine that just covering it would eventually lead to a lot of leakage and more sound...

Mine was rotted on the ends. I had the ends cut off and new pieces welded on. They did tell me if I had a problem later they could take it off and cover it.
What part of Pa. are you from?? I'm heading out in the morning from Mass Via #84 scranton #81 south to #80 and Then to Clarion and return on Friday

I see from your profile that you are a consultant. What kind?

York is the western edge of my territory. I cover SE PA and most of NJ. About 700-900 miles a week for my ride.

Remove the cat, replace with straight pipe. The wide open throttle is a bit louder but there is no resonance at cruise speeds.

tonystewart,

Have you done this yourself?

Any impact on the engine managment systems from decreased back pressure?

Local raceshop in Boca Raton did it to my brothers' car. The car was recently serviced at ******** and no computer errors. The car smokes a little bit more at full throttle and is a bit throatier at full throttle.

Recently did this to my 300SD...dropped my 0-60times by about .8-1 second.
it is a tad noiser...but you only notice the lower end growl inside the car...the rest is all outside. Also changed my muffler so that may be where the slight noise is coming from...but no more cat should sure perk up the fuel milage..if I can keep me foot out of it enough :-D

Last week I had a very similar problem with my '95 E300 Diesel. The catalytic converter rusted where it meets the middle muffler. On my car, its output at that point are two pipes that converge into a single pipe. That single pipe then connects to the middle muffler. Both of these pipes had rusted through.

The local muffler chain (Midas), cut off the two rusted pipes and fabricated a duplicate. they then welded one end to the still structurally sound portion of the catalytic converter, and the other end to the original flange, which was still solid. They than bolted it back to the muffler.

It took them 2 Hrs, looks very professional, and should last for many more years. Total cost was $175.00CDN, about $130.00US (give or take).

Phil

Thumbs up E300 Exhaust

I also needed the entire exhaust system replaced. The dealer in Hartford wanted 1388 for the front pipe with the converter in it and 600 for the rear. I found the rear muffler and pipe online for 207 and today called Rusty from a website on this forum, and got the front pipe for 780!
I guess someone has to pay for those plush service departments...

This happened to me this week...same spot. I'll have to check with the local muffler shop to see what they can cook up. I looked up the stock part in the catalog...$1800 is just too much.

Just take it out and be done with it. Diesels don't need back pressure like a gasser does. Or if you're worried about future visual inspections, just take it out and punch out the guts and put it back in after it's empty. I may or may not have done that on my truck. And my truck may or may not have picked up 2 mpg in hte process.
