Tar as a sealant?

Hi guys.

I have been doing rust repairs on my car. I have a couple of the seems that water had gotten up in and started to rust them out (think, frame seam welds...... ). I cut off the bottom 1/4 inch of them and got ahead of the rust. What I wonder is..................

Can I use tar (roof cement of the hardware variety) to seal up seams, crevices, etc on my car? Seems like it should work really well; waterproof, tough when dry, fills up voids and cracks well, etc. Will it have an adverse effects on metal? I wouldn't think so as most roof vents, stovepipes, etc are galvanized steel and they rarely rust out where the tar is............

Thought it woud be good in those seams, as well as in some places where I've replaced metal, but just can seem to get to it to weld up the back side without totally removing the subframe. Figured if tar would work, I could seal it up as the metal I've added isn't going to fall off by any means but might rust right away.

I figured after the tar dries hard, them spray the entire area with 3M Rubberized undercoating.

What think?

friend of mines dad has a fixation on that stuff, puts it on everything including the vinyl top of my old 73 olds toronado,i won't even get into that, but from what he put on the old IH truck i actually think it sped the rust up,slamed the tailgate one day and a box side fell off.

I actually prefer using cavety protection which does not harden fully, also externally, and just recoat when needed. That is of course only until I get around to do a proper job, usually with POR15. If it is rust free and you just need to seal the seams there are plenty of proper stuff to use.

I don't like the rubber skin, except for the areas being frequent hit by stuff thrown off the wheels.

roofing tar works pretty well. i have used it. it will stop rust and corossion better than filling it with bondo. heat it up with a hair drier or heat gun before trying to use
