Has anybody here run into these cars yet?

Not, literally, of course. I wonder if they are turning up in large numbers in any particular areas. As soon as the hurricane was over, I thought that the used car market would become a lot more treacherous.

I think it was in the last year or so that State Farm had to pay a huge fine for retitling salvaged, flood-damaged cars, and selling them in states all over the country.

With claims for half a million cars totaled by the storm the temptation to do this must be very high for the insurance companies.

They went everywhere. The largest collection of these cars was south of Hattiesburg and appeared to be the central disposal site. All the cars were salvaged titled - but that is soooooo easy to turn around. Some cars were truely a POS but an alarming number had little water damage. READ owners were seizing the opportunity to dump car.

Retitling

I have heard that some states (MS was one of them, if memory serves) make this practice easier than others. In some it's pretty nearly impossible. I bought a car once that had been leased in FL and I suspect had been water-damaged. I didn't have any clear indication of that type of damage, but did experience many electrical problems that I suspected were due to water.

After reading some of the stuff posted on the health issues associated with the Katrina cars, I was pretty freaked out. Electrical problems might be the least of their problems.

Louisiana is actually the easiest (of the gulf region) as you can keep your heap after the insurance company totals, and usually the title does not get notated. CARFAX is only as good as the information that was reported to it. Many counties and parishes are just now getting their DMV's up and going and the cars are long gone to new ownership.

What I was trying to say - there were a lot of cars that were not really flood cars, some fantastic deals for the savy shopper.

Gotcha

That's usually the case. The market (stock market, housing, cars, whatever) usually overreacts to news, good or bad. That creates opportunity for whoever manages to keep the wits about them. That's how I've managed to make some of my best investments.

Maybe it's here and I missed it. Is there information on the forum or somewhere else about how to detect flood damage that someone has attempted to cover up? As you say, they are bound to be some good opportunities out there.

I have not read any good technical write-ups on flood cars or swimmers as we call them There is a smell to a car that has not been completely disassembled and cleaned- you would remember that smell. Now there is a big difference of going to 20 acre area filled with flood cars and knowing what you are getting into as opposed to Joes Car Lot in XYZ Indiana. Of the group we bought to sell (not part out) not one had any water in engine, axles or xmission. Two suffered more damage in the impound area (theft) than they did from Katrina. We sold the cars localy, see them every now and then. Everyone knew exactly about the cars history and were happier than Pigs in S over the price. But those are not the sort of deals that newspapers write about either. The average Joe is not going to pull the body off a 325ic so his kid can have a cool ride without breaking the bank.

Good article with serious implications They should also warn those who indulge in adult beverages on Bourbon street not to wear shorts. If you fell and skinned your knee -- here comes the sepsis.

Hurricane Floyd

Remember Hurricane Floyd? That's the one that hit NC pretty hard four or five years ago. The contamination issues there were similar to those in NO.

The eastern part of the state got hit by storm surge from the coast and flooding from heavy rains in the west. The latter caused containment ponds for animal waste at commercial hog farms to flood low-lying areas severely.

They still have not completely recovered. The government appears to have largely forgotten the plight of those people now that the TV cameras have moved on.

I live in louisiana, and after the hurricane cars are easy to pic up for little to nothing.
Recently its become a hobby of mine to work on the old flooded mercedes and fix them up. The biggest problem ive seen so far is that owners dont know better and run the engine without draining anything, rusting the insides.

I just bought a '81 380 sl that cought water as a "project" car and i know its guna cause me hell but Ive gotten used to the water damage problems and have the resources to fix them so far.
My SL would turn over when we first got her, but she stoped after a few times starting up and movin around. My dads fault, not mine. Im hoping its just a filter change and probably clean up the exhuast.

Alot of people tell me im wasting my time and would be better off spending the money on a refurbished car then putting in the time and effort of this one. But I like being hard headed and when i dont plan on keeping her completely original, wich is why i wanted her.

Oh.. and rust is like cancer... get rid of it one place and itll pop up somewhere else.

If anyone is intrested in getting a flooded car to restore or for parts feel free to msg or email me ((majere12345@hotmail.com)) I go to new orleans and areas that were flooded alot and Im not scared to stop and ask questions... I do it all the time allready

Be careful

Be careful you don't cut yourself on a sharp edge and contract some hideous disease.

I suppose if you can get one cheaply enough and you have the time and inclination, you could come out of that with a pretty nice car. Someone else above mentioned that a lot of the cars being sold as flood-salvaged were not so badly damaged. Good luck with your project.

The majority of cars that have been flooded will go for cheap if not free. People just want to get them out of there yards because they have no need for them. Insurance claims give them enough money to buy new ones, or if there really into classic, get refurbished ones.
Ive actually thought about refurbing one and selling it back to the original owner just for kicks. As funny as it would be, its not worth the time and money.

And if anyone knows of any really good solutions to getting rid of rust let me know. So far im down to cuting and welding, and other places just using P&B Blast (stronger version of WD40)
