W123 front bumper shocks

I have a 1984 300D with a damaged bumper. I have removed it from the car and am trying to get the old bumper shocks off and reuse them on a bumper I just purchased from an '85. The shocks on the '85 apparently bolt onto the bumper(there are bolts still in the bumper) but the shocks on the '84 are welded on or have some kind of clip mechanism that is covered up by a rubber housing. They are really on there tight. How do I get them off the old bumper?
