If you have a couple of saw horses cover the top beam with some old carpet. It will come in handy when putting the gasket and frame around glass before you re-install.

bgkast...

When you say a professional, do you mean a Safelite kind of place, or just a local glass shop? Did they have experience with old MB's or did they just figure out how to do it right?

just talked to safelite...

They quoted me $260 for them to come to me and put a new rear windshield in. I asked about just pulling the old one, putting a new seal on it, and putting it back in. For that, they transferred me to a local shop. The guy at the shop said he wouldn't put a new gasket on the old window or a new one. I asked him how he would get it in without a gasket and he said that what he meant was he wouldn't even touch it, he would let it leak.

So now I'm thinking that the guy who gave me the quote of $260 would have set me an appointment with a similar shop who would show up with a window and no gasket.

Are there any other chainstore type places any of you guys have used that could do the job?

I did mine myself, not that hard really. I know I have a thread about it in the archives somewhere.

Its certianly a weekend project, hopefully you don't find to much rust.

So I decided to just have the rear window replaced. Shops seemed more willing to put a new one in than they were to take the old one out, put a new gasket on it, and put it back in. I made an appointment with Safelite for tomorrow morning. $260 for the window and gasket installed at my house.

BUT....

Safelite called this morning. They've checked with all their vendors and none of them have a rear window for an '83 300SD.

Has anyone used any other chain store glass shops besides Safelite that were able to replace their rear window?

Or, does anyone live anywhere between south Jersey and Delaware that could help me pull the rear windshield, put a new gasket on it, and put it back in?

Anyone???

Have you tried calling a body shop to see where they get glass from?
