On the other hand, even if the car has only liability insurance coverage, Glass replacement is pretty much a standard with any policy. I'd just call the insurance, and it's fully covered 100%. Even the worst insurance companies out there cover 100% free glass, in their cheapest policies. I'd be surprized if you aren't covered for it.

Your insurance may cover it, if you have glass coverage. My insurance company has bought me one, I'm due for another in a couple of years...damn rocks...

The reason your dealer charges that much is because they don't do it themselves but farm it out to a local glass shop and simply double their cost as profit. Go up to the parts desk at your dealer and be really nice to the parts people and ask them who the dealer uses, then call them directly. You'll get the same job done at half the price.

If you would accept aftermarket glass (which is actually the same exact glass, made by the same companies MB buys from but without the MB star on it) the price would be more like 25% what they quoted. My local dealer uses a company called Binswanger Glass who did an excellent install of a new Pilkinton windshield on my '98 E300 for $240 parts and labor. I insisted on Pilkinton glass because that is what the old one was and what the rest of the car had on it.

They told me if I wanted the MB glass it would be around $500 and there was no way to tell what brand it would be in advance - could be any one of 3-4 suppliers MB uses. I opted for the $240 and bought the MB sticker for $2 from the dealer to make it look OE.

www.safelite.com said it would be $201.95 for your car.

Unless you have the rain sensor.

I know it is a different model, but just had mine replaced last Thursday. I called a local indy, that only works on BMW & MB, and asked for a referral because I wanted someone that knew any quirks of my car. While the glass folks were here, I found out that he does work for the MB dealers locally. (Cost $189 aftermarket glass)

(After watching him, I believe I may be doing the next one. I couldn't believe how simple it was on a W126. The only tools he needed were a phillips screwdriver, trim removal tool, draw knife and a long knife.) Hint: Put the car in the sun beforehand and the sealant cuts like hot butter.

The dealer that I went to yesterday said if I buy the car (300sd) and want to replace the glass (has a chip in it with a circular crack around it)
he said he could get me a new one for $150

I also know a guy that comes into work that owns a glass place. He said he could do $225 installed for a windshield for my 81 Camaro if I want it
