$1,000.00 to replace front windshield?

The glass on my windshield is pitted and on some days when sun is at the right angle the pits are very visible. The MB dealer wants a grand to put in a new one...is this reasonable?

pffft

that is alot.. you can buy replacement glass for like 300-400$ and have it installed by a pro for another 200$.. ish.. my figures might be wrong but still 1k for that .. jeeze.. but thats for a W123.. a W210 .. 1k might be reasonable... seeing it is a more recent car

in FL the insurance company replaces the front windshield for free if it is cracked or broken.. I am having mine done soon because of the same issue.. they are getting me OEM glass and OEM gaskets...

Cost my insurance co $250 to have the windshield in my '87 300 changed-at my home. The install was excellent.

i had an estimate and it was only like $240 cash for the at-home install from a national company.

Seems pricey to me, but i don't know the cost of the glass.

You could *wait* for an eye level chip to occur and let your comprehensive coverage replace it.

Reasonable? The best way to find out is get an instant quote here: www.safelite.com

(In my area they quote less than $300. That's about a $700 markup and they don't do any of the work!)

I've also had (W123) windshields replaced buy the local glass places for under $300. It's not OEM glass, but I consider windshields a maintenance item that will require replacement every few years anyway.

Retail price to replace the windshield on the SDL is $1200. at the dealer.

Fortunately, I get a bit of a discount on it........

Boy, those dealers sure have nasty crack habit....$1k for a windshield.
Most likely, they don't want to deal with replacing windshields, so they jack up the price to encourage people to go somewhere else.

PS: I got my rear window from a yard ($20) and 40 or 60 for the gasket. I have a front windshield (from a parts car) that is going in shortly. A lot of times the front and rear glass on a junkyard car isn't necessarily original, so for the huge price difference, it is definitely worth a look.

I got a quote from a place that I have delt with in the past of $185. Thats for an after market manufacturer. They said OEM would be around $450 to $500. Oh yea the time that I got a cheep windshield from this place I matched perfectly.
