Got a paint job quote today...

The SDL needs paint BADLY, so this winter she will get it. Because the SDL always gets what it needs.

Anyway I got what I thought was a great quote today:

$2,500 cash, here are the details:
I would remove everything that I want removed, which would mean all the trim, cladding, lights etc.
The body shop would flat bed the car to and from my house.
They would take out all the dents, smooth everything out and spray it with original Glasurit, 904 blue paint. I need to research if it was clear coated from the factory or not. If it wasn't I won't have them clear coat it. I want a 100% original paint job.
They would replace the left front fender, do to some sill rust. I think from the dealer they are like $250 wholesale. But thats included in the price. The right front fender may be getting replaced as well but I would need to see when I got the bumper off.
They would paint the lower body cladding which I would remove. I need to get the color code from MB, but they would spray it seperatly along with the bumpers. This would prevent overspray and tape lines.

They would not paint the door jams and I don't want them to. The jams are pristine and totaly original, it would be a damn shame to paint them. If you tape on the edge of the door you won't see a line, he said he would blend it and hide it.

Then of course they would wet sand the paint and buff it.

This shop seems to do really good work. There was an S55 AMG getting its bumper fixed in the bay. They do a ton of Mercedes, and a lot of new cars. I think some of the car dealers send there damaged stuff to them.

Usualy they charge between $3k-$5k for a repaint. But I am getting the afterwork, cash, no rush special because I don't have a time frame. I don't care how long it takes as long as they could do it by May.

I'm figuring another $2k on top of that for all new OE window, and door seals. Plus a lot of new body trim. I'm going to put on a new OE grill, Bosch Euro lights, clear corners, washer nozels, all the trunk emblems and trim will be new, new windsheild moldings, and a lot of new molding around the side windows. That stuff's expensive, so I will do whats really hard to do while its all off first. Then over the next year replace it bit by bit. But all the exterior seals are getting tired because they are 20 years old, so they need to be changed.

I think thats a good price for everything, I'm going to be able to do a lot for $4k-$5k. Then I can move onto the interior....

After this it should be in pretty decent shape.

That sounds like a deal, I was thing $5K minimum for the paint. It sounds like you'll be in good shape for $5-6K total, go for it.

I don't have the time. I'm going to college full time, selling real estate and doing side jobs. Finding time to pull it apart and put it back together is going to be hard!!!

Craig if this was a regular drop the car off and pick it up job they would charge me all of $5k. Taking all the bits off saves a bundle in labor, which I beleive is $60 an hour.

Everything they do has a lifetime warranty as well.

I have been doing a 500SE for about two months. Finally got the prep done and shot the midnight blue. Went out Monday morning at 3 AM and shot the clear coat. Before I went to work at 6:30 drove it out in the driveway and let it bask in our 100+F weather for three days. Hit a corner on the trunk with some 1500 last night and rubbing compound - Oh it's going to be nice.

Oh - the moral, you have to find (make) time.

Well what I can't do myself is take out the dents and replace the fender.

I have painted a few boats so I know what goes into it. But I really don't want to do it anymore. I don't really have a place to do it either, I can't do it at my house.

I don't think the original paint formulation is available, epa bs, color no doubt, but you might also consider BSAF, they are the current supplier to MB , they have this patented nanno technology, directionally solidified molecules, that resist scratching and oxidation better than anything out there, expensive though, awlgrip prices.

Dang, that would be one noisy town ...

Hattie that paint job sounds great ... I'd love to do that with my 300D. It had a lousy paint job done about 10-12 years ago, when the car was my dad's. It looks OK but there's overspray, and some areas have rust that obviously developed because they were not painted correctly (plus a few drippy imperfections that only I notice). I've been doing lots of little POR15/touch up paint jobs myself, but one of these days I'm going to do what you're doing. And I'm definately going to have the rocker panels replaced while I'm at it.

That's a very good price for a paint job in the original color. On the West coast about $6,000 to $7,000 for a complete, good one.

It will look like a new one when you get it back. It is better than spending money on a wildly depreciating new car, or car loan interest, as the 300SDL is a very excellent car, and it is safe and long lasting.

Have you seen other repaint jobs on cars done by that shop? It would be nice to see that, before committing.

Seems like a good price. Get it in writing so that they don't "forget" what they quoted you when you take it in.

When you say "clear coat it" as in a seperate clear coat ontop of the flat paint?

I believe the US W126's and W123's had a seperate clear coat put on and the EURO's had a the clear coat mixed with the paint.

My 87 300D has a pre-mixed clear coat in the paint. But ive been told that it wont last as long as a seperate clear.

On the W123s I believe that if the color was metallic it had a factory clear coat, if non-metallic, no clear coat.

bgkast is correct, well according to the 1983 Mercedes-Benz full line brochure. All metallic paintwork has a clear coat over the color coat. Flat colors are just that, so single stage with no clear.

You are going to have a hell of a time sourcing velours for your interior. I wish you luck in that aspect. Also, don't forget the european headlamp wipers as they are different than those for the US market.

I need to start shopping for a paintjob. I got a quick quote of 2-3k from a local shop (very high quality) if the prep is done.

They are doing my friends car now. I'm waiting until I see how his comes out.

"Clear coat" is nothing but a layer of paint with no pigment in it. I don't beleive it was cleared from the factory but I will have to look into it. MB changed a lot for the 1986 makeover, so what they did before that may not apply to what came after. I have some period literature I will have to dig it out and see what they used.

I need to recover the drivers seat, and sourcing that velour is going to be fun. I plan on putting post 86 Euro wipers on it, the part numbers are floating around in the archives somewhere. You can order them!
