Use much salt on the roads in Detroit?
Was that caught by a State inspection or your own? |

I am glad to see that is off the car.
It is amazing to see how thin they are isn't it? It is an engineering marvel and a perfect demonstration of the fact that the shape of a structure is so much more important than the thickness for strength. Can you imagine how they designed that in the era before computers? Tom W

I the era before computers that car would have weighed 6000#.
amazing, a few bends on a flat piece of sheet metal will double, tripple the strength of it. Charlie ☺

Actually I was thinking that that arm would have been designed in the pre computer age.
My 62 fintail weighed less than 3000#, so somehow the benz engineers figured things out pretty well then too. Tom W

glad you caught that.....
Brian --- At least your shock was still working. A guy from Indiana has a 300D with this Right Rear Trailing arm.

Rust from inside or out?
I'm wondering, do those arms rust only from outer moisture/road salt? Or can they also rust from the inside?
I replaced one on my '81 when I first got it, then undercoated the hell out of both arms to try to prevent rust from the outside at least.

I imagine it could happen either way. They must be built sealed but if there is a hole to let moisture in but no way to drain, you'd have trouble.

Quote:
My trailing arms had some surface rust but I painted it with POR and rust-converter stuff. My dad's SD had a tiny hole but he sprayed a ton of rust converter inside there, then patched it shut and treated the outside. So far so good.

That rust through certainly didn't happen overnight. I could drive China as-is for years without doing a thing and it wouldn't be that bad......

That arm was designed by a smart German engineer with a slide rule, penncil, and some paper. The W126 is a mid to late 70's design, no CATIA.
