bumper rubber knicked, how to repair?

My '79 240D was involved in a near-miss no real damage, but the rubber was nicked on the back bumper, and the rubber was pulled out of the bumper. After picking the brains of several of my friends, none of them MB owners, I decided to try spraying the rubber and the bumper with silicone spray, then pounding with a rubber hammer. It worked!!! I tried several other methods, and got my butt kicked. Is there any way of repairing a slight nick in the rubber? olweasel
