Rear fenderwell rust
So, I'm replacing the rear brake lines on my wife's '72 250C and I look down at the right rear fenderwell and I see a bubble in the rustproofing. Being a guy and not smart enough to leave stuff alone, I poke at it with a screwdriver which of course goes through. Damnit! My 1 hour brake line repair just became a rust repair!
This means my wife drives my 280 while I have to drive my 280C project back and forth to work. I hate driving a car under restoration. Not only do I worry about people banging into it but I also have to put up with people pulling up beside you at a light, taking a long slow look down the car and shaking their heads. I tend to drive slouched down with a hat pulled down as low as it will go without completely impairing my vision and wishing for a Romulan cloaking device. Oh well, pics #1 and #2 are of the rusted area after removal of the PVC undercoating and the rusted sheet metal. Heat gun, scrape, heat gun, scrape and wire brush. The inside of the channel is clean metal and the factory paint is still in great shape. Pic #3, cleaned with POR15's "Metal Ready" and treated with POR 15's "Metal Prep". Pay notice to the puddle in the front of the car. You want to be sure the drains are open in the side channels. The drains being clogged are the number 1 cause of rust in the W114's. I gave the channel a good dousing of chain and bar oil and let it drip for a day. I used a pump-up sprayer which has a nozzle for stain. I popped the small bubble visible on the lower rocker, sanded it and re-painted. It wasn't rust, just a crappy spot in the previous re-paint. Pics # 4 and 5, first layer of fiberglass and POR15. |

Looking good Mike. Nice job staying on top of the rust.
Better to poke the screwdriver through it now and fix it, than let it become a much worse issue.

Chad, maybe you can give me some advice on fixing the rust on the Dee8gonator while I'm at the GTG. With as much experience as you have, I would value your opinion and advice on how to go about fixing it.

And the finished product. Pic's # 1,2,&3 are of the repair and pic #4 is a comparison of the original PVC sound proofing texture. I got it pretty close.

Nice job Mike. Once it gets a little dirty from driving, you'll never know there was a repair there.
Dee8go, No problem. I'd love to check it out.
