w123 experts please advise..... w/ jack point hole question

I recently acquired a w123 280e. I was wondering what the thought is using the jack point hole plugs......
did these come on the cars when new?
does it trap junk/moisture in the holes? or prevent it?

I was thinking of putting a coating of cosmolene in the holes and then putting plugs to keep stuff out?
good idea or bad idea??????

thanks for reading.....

No Ferrous foolishness?

If it Ain't got no corrosion the Cosmoline's not a bad idea.
I think the W123s had jack point hole caps as standard.

The W123 did not come originally with plugs. If you look carefully at all 4, you'll notice that the outer surfaces would never allow for a good seal. Attempting to plug perfectly functioning jack holes will simply cause traped moisture followed by rust.
