door making awful sound

I have a 1983, Benz Coupe desil with a good florida body.the drivers door latch going into the inner panel makes an awful sound,also the pin that holds the assembly togther looked lose. i tried to tap it into place but the problem has goten worse. I would to know how to fix this before it gets worse. thanks. bruscoupe.

Clarify please

Not sure I follow. The door "latch" doesn't go into any panel; it mates up with the door locking eye on the B pillar to hold the door closed. Never heard of these getting noisy. Maybe you're referring to the door check strap at the front edge of the door that stops the door from swinging wide open, then retracts into the front fender area as the door closes? If that's what it is, they do get old and cruddy and dried up and then make a kind of grinding noise as the door opens and closes. That can be helped by lubricating with graphite spray or smearing a bit of lube grease on the strap part. But that's only a temporary measure. The door check strap needs to be replaced to get rid of the noise completely.
