Progress - going backwards!

It looks like things are going the wrong way - it looks like the paint is coming back off again... and some of it is!

I've got a bit worried about dampness and de-lamination so I'm cleaning and sanding the whole body again so that I can lay down an other colour base coat and then quickly get the clear coats on.

Here's some information about the cleaner I'm using

For months now (feels like years) I've been taking off the tarpaulin off of the car on dry days and putting it back on before the next down pour. This seems to be the way to make sure the car stays as dry as possible. Never leave a car under a tarpaulin and expect it to be dry when you remove it months later...

Anyway the surface of the car has collected quite a lot of dust and muck during this period of waiting for good weather and I didn't fancy using water to clean it all off - or even a damp rag - so I bought this U-Pol slow degreaser to remove any muck and gunk before I sand.

So far I can report that this stuff does not seem to attack primer, spray filler, or Standox base.

You really need a respirator though.
And here's a picture of the progress going backwards!

The weather man said the weather would be good this week - and it was today (when I couldn't work on the car) and tomorrow guess what?

The joys of a good, toxic stripper.

Don't wait to put the clear on this time, and remember: just enough to hide!

Well I'm not there just yet!

I'm not sure I'd do this outside again though... now it is just a waiting game until I can drop everything and do the 16 hours or so of spraying and waiting for it to dry, spraying and waiting for it to dry etc

Indeed - I've got that message loud and clear! It dries a lot quicker that way too...

Probably the last update for a while...

Where oh where has this summer gone?

I've been waiting and waiting for 3 consecutive dry and warm days to carry on with this job but as we are now nearing September the chances of this happening are slim. We had the first morning fog here (very Dutch weather) two days ago.

The problem is when I'm bored waiting for tools / parts / weather / bits I end up looking for something else to do so I'm now busy welding (which will also delay the paint as you don't want to be welding and painting at the same time)

My W123 saloon / sedan old accident repair (and a bit of rust repair) thread

I will be painting the car myself - I'm not giving up and getting someone else to take the glory now! I'm going to try and find a place where I can spray inside though. Only problem is getting it there =>

You know, I know you want to learn to paint but c'mon now! You'd have the car back and 17 other things torn apart, err I mean, "improved" by now.

Give it up, bite the bullet, spend the money and enjoy the car.

Painting is for someone who has the equipment, experience and most of all the space to spare.

You posted pix of your work space and you simply don't have the room.

I have the room, unfortunately the experience, the equipment and I STILL don't paint! There's a reason for that, you know. I am well aware of what I consider "acceptable" work and I'm too danged nit-picky to ever please myself. I can't even guess how many times I've fired myself for sub-standard work.

Thanks Mike. I think your advice is 100% bang on target for most people - so thanks also for not giving up on this lost cause...

...I don't think I've mentioned it too much though so perhaps you've missed the point...

...for me this IS enjoying the car - I hate driving! I love to "fix" them.

Man, I have about 8 cars that you can enjoy. Just bring them back once you're done with them so that I can enjoy them too

Deal! But you pay for the parts / bits / etc and the shipping from me to you and you to me... I'll gladly dish out free labour!

Al, save yourself some money. Just have Army shipped over to your place. When you get done using him I'll sub-let him from ya.

After about a month or so between Dallas and Tucson, he'll be begging for some of those cold, wet days.

Oh no he won't - he grew up (for a bit) in Africa and really really misses proper weather - and space most of all he misses space!

Ha! I was thinking the same thing. Fly him in for a vacation and keep his passport safe in your possession until he finishes up a few cars

It is official - the wettest summer since 1906

http://nieuws.nl.msn.com/binnenlands-nieuws/knmi-natste-zomer-sinds-1906

Typical! I choose the wettest summer since 1906 to try to paint a car outside...
