Teach me how to weld

I have been wanting to learn how to weld for a while and looking to kind of apprentice under somebody in the Central Florida area.

My main motive is being able to fabricate my own metal parts and to do repairs on my cars.

If you know anyone who would be down to teach me let me know in a pm or something.

Thanks,
Connor

I can't weld either - well I can sometimes make it stick...

The best site I've found is:-

http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/

I plan to learn after I've learnt to spray paint properly (I know that's not the correct order)

Go to Home Depot and pluck down the $340 for the lincoln 110 and get a old fender, watch the video -or get a friend to show you some moves, The auto panels are different than 1/4 " stuff and its more tedious -you have to have more patience---Stiching it together than continuous welding

Thanks for the response guys, just had to buy some parts to rebuild my head but picking up a mig welder in the near future would probably be the best way to learn. I will probably be hard pressed to learn on someone else's stuff.

My local adult education center / college does week end welding courses - and I've seen some tool shops (who specialize in old cars) who do welding courses too. May be you can find something there - check out your local library?

Will do, the only reason I wanted to learn under someone first was to prevent developing bad habits or techniques.

Thanks for the suggestion!

In my area they offer adult education classes in a variety of subjects including welding and bodywork. They are typically taught at night at local high schools. I learned how to weld at a community college. They are good resources, too.

The adult ed classes are usually less expensive and shorter in duration, at least around here, if you don't want to have to commit too much time or money to it to start off.

Good luck.

I wouldn't bother taking a class for wire welding fender patches, floor pans , etc. Tig welding aluminum , stainless, etc however -a class at community college is about the only way to learn that unless you know somebody with the equipment /patience to teach you.

I want to learn mig and tig so I can fab my own custom parts for under the hood

I'm trying to find someone around here with the equipment and patience to teach me like you said but it doesn't seem to exist. I guess I will most likely end up taking a class.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys!

You are absolutely right about the community colleges and now they are making them into mini universities where you hve to takke English before you can take auto body welding.

I complained about this last year, hopefully it hasn't spread to your state.
