Can a good shop blend with just a sunroof panel?
Hi,
My 82 300CD has pretty good paint. The sunroof panel is the only one that looks a bit funny - as if the clearcoat is fading on it from the sun. it is not peeling, it is just getting kind of hazy. Assuming I go to a good high-end paint shop (there is one near me that uses only glasurit and does mostly BMWs), is it possible/prudent to get them to refinish the sunroof panel and get it blended? Is this a bad idea because it will be easily noticed? Since I need to do windshield seals for both front and rear, is it best to do them at the same time so the car can possibly get sprayed with the glass out? If they do this, will they want to/need to remove the sunroof panel? If so, I guess it is he right time to replace the sunroof seal then, isnt it? Im in no rush with the sunroof, it still looks really good, Im just a bit anal. Still it is on my mind and since I do want to attack the windshield seals, I want to try to get stuff done in the right order too... Thanks!

You might be able to get away with just polishing it. I'd try that before going to the extreme of repainting.

Problem is the clear is then thin/degraded... At 162k, and an ex-ca car, I'd like to maximize lifetime looking good since there is lots of life left

Yea sure they could blend but it might just need reclearing sanded right -not cutting into the color.
The main problem is getting a masker/prepper to tape mask the seals to keep any recoating off, You could remove the front seals easy but removing the side ones with the panel in place is more dificult--But not really much more than just removing the sunroof panel from the car and just getting it re cleared by itself, Which is probably what I would do. |

Just sanding would remove protection, there needs to be a layer of clear added.
I'm just thinking of doing seals on the sunroof as a why not... Windshield seals need replacing, so might as well spray with them off so they need not be taped...

You can supposedly use Goo Gone to just remove the layer of clear. Then slightly sand to prep, if its not metallic like silver, dark blue and some other colors.
