Painting a W123 or W115
For anyone who has had this done, how much was it to paint the car and how did it turn out? Also if you did it yourself, how much did all the materials cost (including tools) and how did the paint turn out? If you have had it done or done it, specify W115 or W123, the color, where you had it done (if you did it yourself, specify the environment), and if you know it, the brand of paint that was used, and how long ago was this, and any other information you believe is needed.

I was talking to my paint Guru lately...
first question he asked was ' how many steps ' ? What kind of paint do you want on it ? Do you want a clear coat ? He said paints are now up to typically $200 a gallon... of course they are a tad bit better than the old days... I want to paint mine ' Snowberry White'.. a late 60's MGB and MGC color... really pops when you are near grass or trees... I painted a volkswagon that color and people would stop me on the street and ask about it...

I'm doing the job at the moment as a learning exercise. I've posted lots of information myself here - the good the bad and the ugly - and I've had loads of information from the way way way more experienced. Follow the links in the thread and you'll learn a load of stuff.
I've taken your advice and started to paint!

It is possible to not spray... even to use a hand brush...and get a nice looking paint job.... the trick is to get it thick enough that the rubbing process takes it down to smooth... a lot of wasted paint that way... but if you have more time than spray rig and safe way to apply it... perfectly feasible... with some kinds of paint..

Apparently it gets rid of rust without touching your paint and is safe to drink (don't take me on that one), so if you ever do this job again, I would suggest trying it out, because I have used it before and it works. Thanks for the thread though... I have already learned a lot. |

but you were very slick about it...

Ohh no not at all... Maybe I should speak with them so I could help with marketing but only reason I brought it up is I knew other people that are painting cars need to remove rust and I happened to buy a gallon at Harbor Freight a year or so ago and it works pretty good, so more of an idea than direct promotion... Yea indirectly I'm promoting it but wearing a shirt with a logo on it is indirect promotion... And also I have heard lemon juice mixed with vinegar works too, yet to test that theory but if anyone does test it, report back with results

Yea that stuff sounds good, and so does that stuff that converts rust to whatever that black stuff is called. I might as well go out and buy some of each of these products and comeback to say which works best. And to correct myself, its vinegar or lemon juice (apparently works with either, but vinegar is a lot cheaper) mixed with baking soda (not baking powder) and made into a paste and you spread it on the rust and let is sit for like a day the wipe it off. All I know is if I can find a car here in the south with little or no rust, I'm going to probably strip it all down the treat it so it doesn't ever rust, but only do that work once I know what product is best.
AN ohh yea, keep us posted on the paint |
