W126 300SD/Rust Issues

Hey All,

I posted this morning regarding a 300 SD I will likely be purchasing on wednesday. The car is in tip top mechanical shape, and excellent exterior condition. It has some very minor rust spots on the underside, which can be viewed here:

http://s164.photobucket.com/albums/u29/gdogkzo/1985%20300SD/

Please take a look at the pics and let me know if anything is of major concern, it all looks quite minor to me and these are the ONLY rust spots on the entire car. I have tried to name the pics according to their location on the car. I will also be pulling the battery tray and checking for rust in that location. Thank you for your help and let me know if anything looks serious.

Thanks Everyone,

You may be saving me from an expensive mistake.

Charlie,
The reason I thought this was minor rust is because when I bought my 1983 240D I had a water leak up by the clutch pedal. After cleaning out the fender area drains, I discovered a 4" diameter hole in the firewall above my clutch! After welding in a piece of sheet metal and mar-glassing around the edges, and sanding and repainting my floor, I though this looked pretty minor

When I bought the 84SD about 10 yrs ago, I crawled all over that car, and zero rust. It is a calif car. when I pulled the battery, there was a large hole in the firewall behind the battery almost the size of a soft ball. took out the battery hold down bolt on the drivers side. cleaned up the hole with a dremel cut off wheel, POR`d it, pop rivited on a plate that I sealed good. then had to drill and tap a thick piece and attack to the back side for the tray.

The 85 300D had a worse problem in that area where the drain is and all the panels are welded together. rusted through into the cabin and through the side wall behind the fender.

always, always, always check under the battery before buying one of these MB`s.

the one you are interested in looks bad in the pictures, but may not be structural yet, can`t really tell. lot of the rust get under the under coating and you don`t see it. or if you do see a small area, it is larger under the stuff.

It looks like "minor" rust for MI.. but it looks pretty bad. The pics you took show rust in some major structural areas. Add to that the "questionable" vacuum mess under the hood. In the end it's up to you. But be very careful. That is just the rust you can see! Looks like a decent $1200-$1500 SD.
