Attention 126 Owners! Rust Cause Analysis/Prevention
Hello everyone.
I thought I might bring this to everyone's attention. It might already be widely known but still good to mention. I've been doing some rust work on my 126s and I seem have rust on all three 126s in the same spot. Some worse than others. It appears this drain, over time will, cause rust to form just under it. I have an idea to solve this, my uncle actually pointed this out when we were working on the Green SD. I was thinking about getting a piece of black PVC pipe (or hose). PVC gluing it as well as hose clamping it to the end of that drain pipe. To force the water to fall directly to the ground rather than on to the body tube. I found surface rust in this area on my black car. Some rust on my gold SD and a lot of rust on my green SD. Just thought I'd point this out to other 126 owners. Let me know what you think of all this and my solution.

My car has rather bad rust on both sides in those areas I wonder if salt spray in the winter, which hits the windshield, gets consecrated there by the drain tubes?

Thats my thought. I plan on cleaning up the area and adding in extension tubes somehow..Although Gold car hasnt really seen a winter in years. Its just been sitting due to a bad window seal and tranny issue. Trans fixed now...

I have it bad on my passenger side. Seems my battery, upon death, leaked out something bad. Caused some major oxidation for a while.

It seems these drain tubes are the primary causes of rust in that area. At least on my 3 w126s thats seems to be the case. All of them have rust in that area, mostly surface rust.
Another common area I've seen is just under the sway bar hole and just to the right of it next to the fuse box.. I'm not sure why the sway bar area rusts but I think the area next to the fuse box is a low point and water just sits there and over time...

I don't know about forensics but in the first set of pictures it doesn't look to me like the effluent from the drain caused that rust. I think it's stuff splashed onto the guide rod mount bracket leaking down to that corner that's causing the corrosion.
The situation looks different in the second set of pictures but I don't see how effluent can collect to cause corrosion. Sixto 87 300D |
