That's a great opportunity for your son to learn how to fix his own dings. Looks like a good time to change water pump, thermostat, hoses etc.

I 'totalled' my Volvo 164 twice, and in each instance the damage was very similar to your pic: sheet metal, radiator, trim bits, but engine etc. all fine.
In each instance I haggled with insuror and got it back on the road. Drove it another 50 or 60K with only usual maintenance, and amortized the engine overhaul done at 125K. It was a hassle, but much less of one than going into the used-car market and trying to find a comparable, well-maintained vehicle for $2500 or so. Especially as you have the manual trans, I think you'll not regret staying with her. |

Fixed our W124
Amazing - almost identical teenager rear ending a truck sort of accident happened to us - Our W124 diesel was totaled by the insurance company. Local indy didn't see any frame damage and worked with me to rebuild the car. Did a fine job, complete with a new paint job. The car looked great - until same teen drove the car to the prom and called telling us the engine was running so rough he didn't think he could make it home.
Long story short - the pin on the big gear hung on the front of the crankshaft had wobbled out from the crash, taking about 2,000 miles to completely come off. The engine was beyond repair, so rebuilt engine time. Had the car almost 10 more years, gave it to daughter for a graduation present and she drove it to over 300,000 miles. She finally traded it in on a new car (not a Mercedes, but a nice one regardless) and still talks about "her" Benz. OK - would I have done this again, knowing the outcome? Yes. The car was definitely worth rebuilding. Hope yours is the same. Good luck, and please post results with pictures! |
