Fix or Part?

Fix or Part?-image.jpg1992 190e 2.6 5spd. Son just banged front. $2,300 to fix. 113,000 miles generally good condition. Beautiful interior. Should I fix it, sell it or part it?

What body shop gave you the $2300 estimate? Insurance company "preferred" shop, your shop of choice, or a dealer?

We towed to a AAA preferred shop. Didn't have a bunch of options at the time. I have to move the car today or authorize repairs. Not the best situation.

A 6 cyl 5 speed 190 isn't that common.

One way to assess repairs. If the car vanished yesterday and you needed to buy another car, would you pay $ 2,300 for this one in pre crash condition knowing it's history?

$ 2,300 is probably a reasonable figure, while the hit is light and very repairable, there are a fair amount of parts / work here. Sure, you can fix it your self for less but the shop is fixing cars to make $ not as a hobby.

Looks like the car went under the bumper of a truck so frame damage will be non existent as the car got hit in a soft spot. I say fix it.

97 sl320 that's is correct on the hit. The 190 slid under rear number of a minivan. The speed was low and no frame damage. The saga continues as I continued to ask questions about the estimate, the questions seemed to not be welcomed. For instance they listed two part#'s for a new radiator and condenser. That's good so I asked about these to confirm they were new. Don't want a used rad or condenser unless I know what condition, etc. it was a mistake they were using a used rad and condenser. I requested new and a few other things of course the estimator needed to get info and call back. He did and said the used body parts they had sourced were no longer available and that they couldn't fix the car. Needless to say I towed it to my home and will begin assessment myself. At least I will know what was done and that it was done right.

Shops generally don't like fixing older cars due to parts sourcing issues. Have a look on car-part.com this is a salvage yard inventory search for participating yards . ( It is run by hollander the parts interchange book people )

You need to find a old school body shop that is interested in pulling / painting the car but leaves the rad / headlights / other misc labor intensive stuff to you. Depending on how much $ you are willing to spend, there will always be some remnant of prior repairs. ( not to say the repairs are shabby just different than original. )

FWIW. When my kids were teen drivers, I repaired a '92 400e when one of them rear ended a pickup truck and a very nice '94 Infiniti Q45 when the other one rear ended a van. Kind of typical teen driver mishaps. Each looked very similar to your son's accident. Still have both cars today & glad I got them fixed.

PARSHOOT1 eerily similar here although my 91 q45 didn't fare as well as your 94. Mine ended up resting on its roof after flipping end over end from a right front tree hit. The car did its job protecting my son and a front seat passenger.

A few more things.

Take the belt off and spin the fan clutch / pulley, look for wobble. The fan clutch or the fan mount shaft can bend. Feel for any roughness, the bearings balls can brinell the races when then see a axial load. Lastly. look at belt alignment / mount housing. The bearing can be pressed into the housing / housing crack.

When you buy a hood, get the hinges also. With a front hit, the hinge can be bent and very difficult to tell where it is bent let alone getting it back into shape.

Agreed. Have a new clutch and fan coming as well as the other parts needed to put back on road. Need to check the fan clutch mount for damage. Planned on grabbing hood w hinges. I will post updates.

A bit of progress. Got some of the parts. Resealed camshaft and cover. Bought a parts car to donate parts to repair the 92. It's a 1991 2.6 auto w/111,000 miles. Anyone need parts let me know.
