Question Type of Paint?

My '86 560SL has the original Signal Red Paint. Is this a clear coat? How about my '92 300 SE?

The red 560 has a lot of blotches, oxidation? I'm thinking of getting an orbital machine to polish the surface. Have any other novices used this successfully?

I can practice on my old trucks before moving onto a valuable car. But on the other hand, If I can't even tell what type of paint I have am I smarter to take it to a shop?

If the color of paint comes off on your rag when you take a cleaner to it, it's not clearcoated. Be careful!!
