Paint Cracking

I am new to MB ownership and this might be an obvious question. I recently purchased a 1982 300d with the intent on restoring the vehicle. When I looked at the car I noticed that the paint was showing its age and cracking. There are other more pressing things that I need to complete on the car before I address the paint issue.

I intend on getting the whole vehicle repainted (all badges, bumpers, wheel covers, ect removed) and brought back to factory new. However, in the mean time is there anything I can do to stop the deteoriation until that time.

I am a little hesitatant on waxing because it seems that this might exasterbate (?? spelling) the situation.

Please reply with help.
