Paint the exhaust?

I have this crazy idea of painting the exhaust manifold, turbine housing, and turndown pipe. "Chevy" orange, bright red, bright yellow, etc. Something to make it look like it's glowing "red hot."

I know the temp can get up to 1250*F. Would off the shelf engine enamel or BBQ grille paint (If I can find that color ) work? If I did use one of those would it just flake off or could I risk a real fire?

I dont think there is a fire risk but I doubt it will last. Ive tried many times to paint headers and you could,'t keep em looking nice. I really don't know which is hotter.
But, that said, try it out and let us know if you have luck.

The classic Mustang people try this all the time. You can either powder coat it or chrome it. Any other paint will peal off after about a month. We did my sons 65 Mustang headers with POR15 and they promissed it would not peal off. A month later they refunded our money when it pealed off.

VHT makes a 1500* paint. I have never been able to get the DIY paint/coatings to last. Powder coating definitely won't last, its only good for @450* If you really wanted to get fancy take the parts off and send them to www.jet-hot.com or www.airborncoatings.com These finishes are very durable and warranteed. You are correct Jet-hot not powder coat. Been a while since I looked at this.

Old guy perspective

Save your money and spend it elsewhere. You must be running good if you've got time to worry about that.

I've had good results with Eastwood's Stainless steel exhaust paint. Its isn't Chevy orange, but it looks like clean steel.

Heres the stuff I was thinking of http://www.volvette.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?store_code=VVP&screen=PROD&product_code=PT88 Its like a paste you brush onto cast iron and then it cures with the heat of operation. Not supposed to flake off like paint. Eastwood used to carry it but stopped. Dunno why? RT

Griots Garage website sells an exhaust paint, I have no experience with it but they don't seem to mess around with products that don't work.

My motorcycle/sportbike/Dragbike buddies would second the motion toward the "Jet-hot" coating. Not sure what color you get (...or can choose from? diallup discourages too many web pages at once...) But I'd go with that if it were me.
