tonight i got off work and decided i would remove the brake pads and apply some anti squiel paste to them and lube the ball joints(temporary fix) . well upon getting under it i noticed that right under where the battery tray goes it seems to be forming rust. (wasnt there when i por 15ed the battery tray) so i removed as much as i could and removed some of the undercoat around it. i found my can of por15 and had to hammer a screwdriver into it to get to the good paint and proceded to paint the rust. :) now i feel better about it. i also fixed my headlight problem. now if i could just fix my ac problem and beat the az heat. :o :o

Rust under the battery usually means a battery that is leaking acid. In the stone age of cars it was common for batteries to boil over and leak, but with today's batteries and alternators you should not have this problem unless you have a defective battery or an alternator that is overcharging. I suggest you remove the battery, inspect it for damage, clean all under and around it and if necessary repaint with POR 15.

Remove the battery tray and pour some water and baking soda solution over their to get ride of the acid. Then paint everything. They have acid matts you can put under the battery that will soak up the acid and nuetralize it.

yes i have done that. almost all batterys leak even optimas can. some more than others.

There is also some aresol products available that come out yellow and turn red upon contact of acid. Pretty cool stuff as it neutralizes too.

We had one of our batteries on out F-350 come out of its holder on a super bumpy road and it fell into a serpentine belt and proceeded to shred open the case of the battery. There was acid ALL OVER that engine compartment. This was on a trip over into Colorado, then up north to Canada. Climbing Pikes peak in a crewcab with a 460 and a 3 ton camper on the back is a slow drive.

I kept asking dad (me...15 at the time) what that nasty pickle smell was that I kept smelling. Eventually we opened the hood and found that suprise :(

Sad thing was, that 460 was so shiney and new becuase he had just built it. Its still sorta shiney but it needs some polish...battery acid = bad
