peeling clear coat/paint question
I have a 83 300D with 251K miles. On the sun roof panel, the clear is peeling very badly, it is like blisters. It is funny that the rest of the roof is not peeling, only the sun roof panel. On the hood, the paint is fading in spots all the way to the primer. This also seems unusual because it is only in a few spots. My question is, does my car have a two stage clear coat paint? Can I shoot single stage paint on the hood and roof and will it match the rest of the body paint? The color of the car is the common metalic dark grey. I have shot paint before but only single stage. I am wondering if the single stage paint will look right with the rest of the car.
Thanks. rene |

All the metallics of that era are base coat/ clear coat, non-metallics are single coat. You can get your color in either type and of course in many brands and qualities. I have done some panels of my '81 in single stage and it makes a good "20 foot paint job", but if you want a decent job, you will have to go to the two stage. BTW your experience is typical of a clear coat paint job; i've had the experience on AMerica cars too.
