De-rusting calipers

Awhile ago I asked a question about rust and someone sent me this cool link about how to remove rust electro-chemically.

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/456478/rust_removal_tip/

I'm wondering if application of this method is feasible on fully assembled brake calipers, or if it would compromise the seals.

Thanks,
Rex

Don't do it on assembled calipers. You couldn't seal them well enough to prevent moisture from entering and I don't know what chemical changes the process would do to the brake fluid still in the calipers.

Rebuild kits are pretty inexpensive but then again, so are rebuilt (already purtyfied!) calipers.

I ran across a kit recently for painting your brake calipers without taking them off the car. It includes some type of cleaner/prep stuff to get rid of old dirt and rust, I believe. If I can find it again, I'll post it here. I'll most likely try it if I succeed in buying a set of new wheels this weekend.

Here's the stuff I mentioned. It's supposed to get rid of the rust, too.

That is an impressive little video. I'm going to have to try that on something.

You'll get lots of practice on that new 280SL, Paul.
