89 560SL underbody paint question

I read somewhere online, I think on this forum or another that the 560SL has color matched underbody paint. My question is if this is true. I have an 89 560SL and wheel wells and exhaust are black in color same as the body. It has only 29k miles and the black paint on my rear muffler is peeling I guess from the heat?? Now it doesnt look too bad but when I sell it down the road some people might think that the car is repainted which it isnt. Is there paint i can buy to accurately match the original black muffler paint

i would not

think that the muffler was painted from the factory. aren't they usually bare metal? in that case i would just strip off the paint on the muffler.

W126's have matched underbody paint as well. I just spent the day under mine and the whole underneath is blue just like the car when you scrub the dirt away.

If the fenders are undercoated another color, usually black, since that is common I would suspect an accident at some point in the cars life.

*edit* I just re read the post.

If you want a 10 point concours fix remove the muffler and have it painted. Or you could probably order a new OE one.

you are certain that the muff is supposed to be painted body color?

i have never seen any benz or any other car in which that is true. all factory systems i have ever seen are galvanized. ansa replacement systems are flat black.

The muffler might be black but it's not to match the body. I don't think the originals came in black but I've seen factory replacements painted black. Maybe to protect them for long-term storage.

Check www.eastwoodco.com for finish alternatives.

Bid good day to a potential buyer who insists your original paint car has been repainted based on that observation. Dealing with him/her is going to be a big headache.

My SL is black so the inside fenders are black as well. I checked my 560SEL wheel wells and they are indeed the same color as the body. (Midnight Blue) Thanks for the link BTW...
