still leaking
I already cleaned out the debri in the hood latch wells but that wasn't it. With last nights rain, I have a puddle on both sides again. It is dripping onto the hood release latch and in the same area on the passenger side. I tried to get the wiper grills off but the screw covers didn't want to come off and I didn't want to pry too hard and break it. What's the trick to get the grill off?

Replacing the front window gasket is a relatively inexpensive repair (roughly $70 labor and $70 for the gasket). Even if this isn't your problem, it's a nice preventative measure if it's never been done before.

Check under the battery tray for rust. The hood hinge area drains there and is also an area for extreme rust on the firewall.

the square little bottun things are released by pushing in the center with a small point...I doubt water the area of the grilles would enter the cabin. The big (~2"diam.) rubber thing drains that area into the engine bay - down the firewall...

Where can I get those?
I need to replace mine, as the lip that connects to the firewall on each one is somewhat melted (can't fit them back on properly). Thanks, Pete. |

Could the sunroof drain be my problem? I have not cleaned that area yet. Or is it the windshield gasket most probably the culprit?

Found the leak!
The 2 corners of the windshieldgasket in the passenger compartment was seeping wet. As a temp measure, when it's dried off I'm going to clean it real well both inside and out and apply some rubber sealant and see if that will stop the leak. Anyone had luck doing that?

i have had excellent luck
with silicone for over 15 years now. clean gasket with alcohol and let dry, then trim an eighth of an inch off the part touching the windshield, run a small bead of black silicone there. it that doesnt stop it i would run some between the gasket and the body work deep in.
sometimes a new gasket will leak too and i have caulked them too. 100% silicone only. tom w

Darn I just put 2 orders through on monday you could have piggy backed on mine. The trans and driveshaft are out on the SDL so Phil and I talk a bit.
I think I am done for now, but I need to fix the poor idle on the 300SD. I may be ordering an injector are rack dampener bolt from Phil but probably not for awhile. Sorry for not getting back to you.

Maybe he hasn't shipped yet. Could you call Phil and check? If not, can you add 2 motor mounts for 83 300 D turbo. They're about $23 a piece.

It's siliconed
I used a bondo squeegee applicator to clean out the junk between the gasket and windshield with the help of alcohol and compressed air, then wiped many times with squeegee and Bounty paper towel/ alcohol. You wouldn't believe the amount of black crap that was in there! After it was clean "enough", with a squeegee inserted between gasket and windshield to create a gap, I squeegeed black silicon into the gap with another squeegee along the entire bottom part of the windshield. Then I squeegeed the excess silicon for a very clean looking job. Now I just have to wait for the next rain to see if it will seal.
