My right door on my 91 SL has rust underneath, toward the front. There is no rust anywhere else on this car, and it spent its entire life in California - LA area. Why would it rust in that spot? How would you fix this? Replace the door, or take it off and weld in a new piece? Will all 129 doors fit all 129s?

And while I'm at it, any leads on later model taillights for my 91?

Pictures needed.

Depending upon how serious the rust is:
Option #1. Clean in/out POR15 repaint.
Option #2. Weld in new metal, clean in/out POR15 repaint.
Option #3. Buy a good used door, paint to match.

Without pictures inside/outside, there is no way to answer this question.

Many doors rust out because the drains become plugged.

Hey, that is the weak point on the R129. They have window seals that dont quite seal correctly, so the water leaks down thew door and collect at the low point. Thus leading to rust and some other problems. So you have the original Bose loudspeaker in the door? If you dont or you have had it replaced, it is because the water wets the cone, destrying the correct accoustic properties of it.

Mercedes Benz found this problem in what appears to be 1993, and updated the door design for 1994. They have holes in the bottom that lets the water drain out of the door when it collects. My dad and I have found when we park the 600 out in the rain for an hour or two, you open the door, and water flow from the center where it collects and releases when opened. I will take pictures of this drain so you can solve you rust problem.

Performance Products sells the updated rear tail lamps in their magazine as well as online. Howeve, I read somewhere that the updated tail lamps actually have a negative effect on the cars Aerodynamics. I would reccomend leaving them alone, as they match the cars lines much better than the new ones.

That would be great if you could take some pix of the redesigned holes. The extrerior door paint is fine. I'm going to attempt fixing the door bottom.
