Unless it is a structural area, there is no reason to weld.

Prices on a paint job for a 1980 450 SL

Hi,

My 1980 450 Sl was at the bottom of a heap of garbage in a garage when I bought it 2 months ago.
All of the scratches and small dings show it.
I brought it in to a shop across the street from the Me/Be dealer and he gave me a price from the doors back 8 grand for paint. I told him no thanks. A few dings and paint should not cost that or should it?
Has anyone here recently had their car shot and can give me an idea of a fair price to paint my SL?
I do not need a 15 coat better than factory job. I am looking for a clean straight job that looks good.

Thanks
Jack

Drivers window height adjustment

Hi,

My drivers window goes up too high with the hardtop on. Is there a stop adjustment for this?
Should I wait and see how high it goes with the soft top on before I take the panel off? Will it be the same? I hear that both tops are a little different.

Thanks
Jack

I would recomend that the first step would be to spray any and all rusted areas with a produst called "OsPho". I believe that it is either phosphoric acid or muriatic acid and is available at a marine supply or most larger hardware stores. This OsPho will neuralize the rust and prevent it from continuing. Since it is within your rocker panels, insure that you squirt or spray as deep into the opening as possible. Then fill the hole with Kitty Hair type type BONDDO. I prefer to top the pollyester type BONDO with a finish coating of epoxy mud. Using this method I have never had a recurrance of the rust. USE GREAT CARE AS THE ACID AND THE RUST CAUSE TOXIC FUMES !! Apply the OsPho out of doors and not in the garage.

Hunting for Body Parts

1 Attachment(s)
My 73 450SL was involved in an accident a few months back. Luckily, nobody was injured and the car is still mechanically sound. Amusingly, she destroyed two Japanese cars and a Chevy Lumina in the accident, and was still driveable. After towing her up to my folks place in Chicago for storage, I decided she needs to be fixed. However, I think I have a difficult task ahead of me: finding parts. The easy parts are going to be the left euro headlight assembly, radiator, and front grille. I'll deal with those when I need to. The hard parts are going to be a hood, front left fender, front frame crossmember (that the hood latches down onto), and front left chrome wheel well trim.

Any ideas on where to find those body parts on the cheap short of buying another SL that either has a blown engine or got nailed from behind?

Thanks.

Anyone else notice that alot of the SL models have a rust spot by the model number on the trunk?

I think pre-86 cars used pins and speednuts to locate the embelem, 560's used a chromed plastic embelem put on with double-sided foam tape. Not as sturdy (perhaps...) but no holes. Holes = eventual rust. The 560's star is also chromed plastic/double-sided foam tape, I think.
