Paint Codes/Leather codes

Hey whunter that is very cool info!

I just bought a 1988 MB 300 SE that is grey with navy leather interior, that I'm very excited about! Just getting the mechanical checked, new tires, new windshield and will be detailed inside. BUT before I do the outside I want to repair/address the little scars, scrapes, little dents, rust

I'm very excited as it is in great shape overall, pretty low km's but needs a little touch up. Every guy that's seen it, drools over the "inline 6"!

  1. the "grey" rubber bumpers are scarred / scraped
  2. the chrome has some rusty spots (which I discovered tin foil w water takes most of it out, thanks to another site)
  3. there are some small rock chips
  4. a few tiny rust spots
  5. one dent by the bumper
  6. weird C shaped cut on the drivers side - which the windshield guys happened to tear again!
  7. wonky passenger's side back seat to bench - crescent shaped "hole" not sure if the clips are broken or it's lost its springs.

I'd like to address these before our wonderful cold Calgary winter returns, as I do plan on driving it. It will very different going to RWD from FWD.

I called a paint specialist, but he told me they can't match it cause it's too old!

It would be great if you can list the '88 MB 300 SE paint/leather codes!

Do you have any idea where in Canada (or elsewhere if required) to buy the paint/supplies?

Thank you

New proud owner of an '88 MB 300 se!!

If you look for your VIN a lot of information can be found from that. There's also a data tag (usually on the front cross member by the bonnet catch) that will have your paint code on it...

...whilst the paint code will give you the correct factory colour that is easy for any decent paint shop to mix it is difficult to get a 100% perfect colour match if the older paint is faded. Still the colour code is a good starting place.

Hey Stretch,

Thank you! Before seeing your response, I stopped by my local MB parts desk and they were helpful.

It is "Laguna Grey" 735 and I never would have discovered that from the VIN! They had the sale date but no other info on the car!

From the whunter links I found how to read the VIN, which includes the week and year of manufacture but again that doesn't co-incide with the date on the label inside the door! Odd.

The parts fellow echoed your comment about a good shop mixing the colour match.

So thank you, for taking the time to reply!

Any other forums or areas I should check - as a newbie MB owner - would be appreciated!

I haven't driven it yet, just getting it all cleaned up first with tires, windshield, detailing. Next comes the rock chips, pin head rust spots, bumper scarring and high polish ... then ready to ride and take the first drive!
