What was the original W123 Paint type? Was it clearcoat?
I am curious as to what the original W123 Paint technology type for the 80-85 Models?
Was it clearcoat? Sometimes, I dont think so, I think it was only a basecoat. Does anyone know what type of Paint it was? Was it Lacquer, or Enamel?

Clearcoats became commonly used in 1995 - so the w123s have acrylic enamals on them. I prefer them on the older cars because you can take a minor layer off when polishing and the color will come back to looking like new. Not so easy with damaged clearcoats.

I THINK ( not sure) that many of the later cars (mostly metallics) had a clearcoat on them, but it was not the current urethane basecoat/clearcoat. Most likely acrylic enamel. My wife's car (83 300D) was russet brown with a clearcoat that was peeling. We eventually painted it with Kirker's Single Stage Urethane in GM Flame Red (looks almost like Signalrot for a lot less money). Kirker puts out a decent line of pre-mixed paint at a very good price. I paid about $40 gallon for it, and that is really cheap for red. I try to stick with single stage urethane (like POS indicates) because it can be buffed out to get down to new color when it fades.

Standard paintwork wasn't clear coated and metallic was.
The 85 mercedes book says there are 9 total layers: Zinch Phosphating and Precleaning Cathodic Electro-Coated Primer Undercoating (bottom) Gravel Protection (bottom) Second Primer First Color coat (synthetic resin color base) Second Color Coat (synthetic resin sprayed and baked to a hard lustre *Lacquer Coat on metallic-finish cars Anticorrosion Wax Protection (bottom, engine, hollow body spaces and other pieces exposed to corrosive influences)

just to clarify. solid colors like white, cream, red, etc are not clear coated and can be buffed. metallics such as silver, smoke grey, and light blue, are clear coated. doing anything on one that has clear coat peeling off is not going to be very productive in the long run, i dont think
