rusty fuel tank
I have a 1986 420 SEL which was recently purchased from a gentleman who let it sit for some years! Now I have a problem with rust or the residue of fuel which has left a deposit in the tank! Would it be better to replace the tank or to get it sealed.Does anyone have any experience with this problem?

Ouch !!!
A new tank for that is $935 from Mercedes. You should be able to find a good used one or as a last resort seal that one.

There is a new Epoxy material made for coating fuel tanks, I had it done some 6 years back on a 230 I once owned. It held up fine! The radiator shop that did the work was real careful to apply it after the tank was cleaned using an old chain (I didn't see it but wonder if it wasn't a chain like from a hardware store?) Two men held the tank with solvent and alternately rocked it from side to side to agitate the chain until the old rust was loosened up and they then dried it. Afterwards they coated it. They told me they stuck a hair dryer into the level sender hole to dry the epoxy and let it run. It took several days before it was ready.
I recall they charged me $90 but I dropped the tank and carried it in to save bucks. Finding (and shipping) a replacement tank is a PITA. That's why I went that way. One point I remember is that you should not let the coating go up into the fill neck because when you stick the filler nozzle in it may scrape some of the coating off it will plug the strainer or filters. The coating is impervious to gasoline and I assume diesel (my car was a gasser).
