loose fender

My 1982 300SD has developed a strange and loud noise coming from the front passenger side at idle, especially when the car is first started. After looking at the car with it running I can see that the part of the fender between the back of the wheel well and the door is vibrating. How do I get this reattached?

Pull put a 10mm socket and screw it back in?

If the 126 fender is similar to 123 fenders then open the front door right behind the affected fender. There should be a few bolts on there, try to tighten them see if they're loose.

They apparently are similar. I opened the door and looked at the part you see from the inside of the door, nothing, from the outside of the door, 3 10mm bolts. They are a little tricky to get to, but an extension on my socket, and the bottom one was actually loose, not very, but enough.

So was it that one loose bolt that made the noise?

Actually you could watch the whole back edge of the fender vibrate. On these there is a slot where the bolt goes through, I guess so you could tweek the fit. The bolt loosened up enough to slide through that, which didn't take much at all.
