W126 Fender Replacement (General ?'s)

I'm looking at a W126 300SD in need of a front fender. The car comes with a spare fender. Are these hard to replace? I know the early W123 cars used a form of adhesive bonding that required more labor, which is why I ask.

Thanks

adhesive?

I'm curious about that W123 comment, because I was just pricing replacement front fenders. Adhesive? Do you see it when you open the hood? Thanks

I hate to dig up this old thing...

I have the same question and no one really answered this one. Is a 126 fender swap pretty straight forward? I will be going to a junk yard to find one and I don't want any surprises.

PS.. I did find a fender that was in a fire.. no paint at all. Would it be too much work to clean it up and paint? Most fenders around here are rusted or smashed.

Thanks

126 fender

126 fender is easy to replace, found no adhesives on my '89.
The small fasteners below the turnsignal may be rusty and difficult to remove.
Fire damaged fender would likely be wavy.
A member I know of , does have good fenders.
Let me know if you'd like to contact him.

Very easy indeed. All straight forward.... Good time to check for developing rust issues

I got 2 fenders today. Very easy indeed, even with the car sitting on the ground w/o wheels.

Now I need to paint them to at least approximate my silver car. Any CHEAP ideas?

I have a lot of cheap ideas, but, alas, no ideas of how you can do that cheaply . . .

another quick question

I gotta guy who will spray them for a good price. Remember I dont really care what they look like as long as they are about the same color. The whole car needs painted at some point... too much questionable rust for that.

This guy needs me to find paint OR he has some 2004 Taurus silver he can use. Any idea how close 04 Ford taurus silver is to 83 300SD silver? He will also find paint but it will cost more.

Thanks

To make the archive complete, here are some scans of the W126 Chassis and Body Manual

Ok I am back with the fender replacement.

I got the new fenders on tonight... I am NOT a body man!! Right fender looks great. The left fender looks ok. The problem is at the top right corner by the side mirror the fender is further "in" than the door. This causes there to be an uneven spot between the fender and the door. Looks like the door is sticking out too far, but it's not because I didnt mess with the door.

Do I have to shim the fender at the top for it to come out and meet the door?? I really have no idea. These fenders came off another 126 so they are german. All the gaps are even and stuff
